Populism Reaches Europe

Populism, and its close relationship with the issues of immigration and nationalism, has recently reached the European continent.

3

The rise of populism in Europe is most closely related to immigration issues. Given the rising number of immigrants in Europe, right-wing populist parties have emphasized the importance of stricter immigration policies. Populists seek the safety of “natives” over “aliens.” The latter group includes minorities such as immigrants, refugees, and specific ethnicities like Muslims.

4

It thus seems that the populist ideology in Europe is vastly influenced by nativism. Extreme right-wing populists claim that only “natives” own state resources and should not share them with foreigners. While nativism is not the same as populism, European populists often use nativism or nationalism to separate “their people” from “invaders.”

5

On the whole, immigration and nativism have determined European populism. The more immigrants, that is, the more “aliens” there are, the more populists and “natives” need to make to guarantee the prosperity of “their people.”
