5 Themes Recap

  • Five themes: Location, Place, Region, Movement, Human-Environment Interaction

  • Human Geography is the "why of where."

3

Location

  • Absolute Location is found using the coordinate system of latitude and longitude.

4

Latitude

  • Latitude is measured in distances North and South of the Equator (0 degrees).

  • Each line of latititude is parallel to each other and they are known individually as "parallels."

  • So if you started at the Equator (0o) and moved north, eventually you would reach the North Pole (90o N).

  • The measure of degrees of latitude is inverse to the measure of degrees of temperature.

6

Longitude

  • Lines of Longitude measure distances East and West of the Prime Meridian (0o) until you reach the International Date Line (180o)

  • Individual lines of longitude are known as Meridians and are based on a 360o measurement.

  • Time zones are based on Longitude. Every 15 degrees of Longitude equals roughly one hour for a time zone. (360/24=15)

Hemispheres

  • The Equator divides the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

  • The Prime Meridian/IDL divide the Earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

  • North America and Europe are the only continents entirely in the Northern Hemisphere. Antarctica and Oceania (Australia) are the only continents entirely in the Southern Hemisphere. Asia, Africa, and South America are in both.

  • Asia and Oceania are only in the Eastern Hemisphere. North and South America are only in the Western Hemisphere. Europe, Africa, and Antactica are in both.

Recap

  • We find absolute location using latitude and longitude.

  • Now try these questions out and see how you do:
