Lesson 8: Act Science Mastery

2
Passage
Under certain conditions, hydrogen and oxygen gas can be mixed together to form H20. Students performed the following experiment to study the formation of H2O.
3
Passage
The chemistry students fitted a gas syringe with a sparking device, then filled the syringe with different levels of H, and O2 gas. The syringe plunger was then locked in place and the gases were sparked. The resulting reaction caused water to form inside the syringe. Finally, the plunger was released, and the gas in the syringe was allowed to adjust temperature and pressure. The final the gas was recorded and analyzed to its composition. Table 1 shows the experiment with varying initial levels H2.
4
Since the chemistry students have a learned that equal numbers of molecule different gases occupy equal volumes at the same pressure and temperature, the following equation
2H2 + O2 ---> 2 H2O
5
Multiple Choice
According to Table 1, what was the final volume of O2 in Trial 1?
20 mL
30 mL
0 mL
10 mL
6
The correct answer is C
The row labeled Trail 1 has a 0 in the Final 02 column.
7
Multiple Choice
According to Table 1, what was the final volume of H, in Trial 5?
0 mL
15 mL
50 mL
20mL
8
The correct answer is D
The row labeled Trail 5 has 20 in the Final H2 column
9
Multiple Choice
What trail had the highest final volume of H2
Trail 2
Trail 3
Trail 4
Trail 5
10
The correct answer is D
The highest number in the Final H2 column is 20. This is in the Trail 5
11
Multiple Choice
What trail had the highest final volume of O2?
Trail 2
Trail 4
Trail 3
Trail 5
12
The correct answer is B
The highest number in the Final O2 column is 30. This is in Trail 3 row.
13
Multiple Choice
What trial had the greatest difference between the initial H2 volume and the final H2 volume?
Trail 2
Trail 3
Trail 4
Trail 5
14
The correct answer is D
The difference between the initial and final H2 volume in the Trail 5 row os 50 - 30=20. This is greater than the difference in any other row
