What about negative numbers and powers?

• If the negative sign is in parenthesis it is included

   $\left(-2\right)^4=-2\times-2\times-2\times-2=16$  

• If the negative sign is not in parenthesis it is not included  $-2^4=-\left(2\times2\times2\times2\right)=-16$  

What if we multiply exponential forms?

• Example: $5^2\times5^3$  

• The bases must be the same!

• Keep the base and add the exponents

•  $5^{2+3}=5^5$  

•  $9^8\times9^{-6}$  

What if we divide exponential forms?

• Example:

   $\frac{8^7}{8^4}$  

• The bases must be the same!

• Keep the base and subtract the exponents
  

•  $8^{7-4}=8^3$  

Power to a power

• If an exponent is taken to an exponent you multiply the exponents and keep the base the same.

• Ex: $\left(5^3\right)^6$  

•  $5^{3\times6}$  

•  $5^{18}$
