What about negative numbers and powers?

  • If the negative sign is in parenthesis it is included

     (2)4=2×2×2×2=16\left(-2\right)^4=-2\times-2\times-2\times-2=16

  • If the negative sign is not in parenthesis it is not included  24=(2×2×2×2)=16-2^4=-\left(2\times2\times2\times2\right)=-16

What if we multiply exponential forms?

  • Example: 52×535^2\times5^3

  • The bases must be the same!

  • Keep the base and add the exponents

  •  52+3=555^{2+3}=5^5

  •  98×969^8\times9^{-6}

What if we divide exponential forms?

  • Example:

     8784\frac{8^7}{8^4}

  • The bases must be the same!

  • Keep the base and subtract the exponents

  •  874=838^{7-4}=8^3

Power to a power

  • If an exponent is taken to an exponent you multiply the exponents and keep the base the same.

  • Ex: (53)6\left(5^3\right)^6

  •  53×65^{3\times6}

  •  5185^{18}
