Fill in the Blank

From John Hersey’s Hiroshima - “He became an ______, mechanically wiping, daubing, winding, wiping, daubing, winding.”

What clues from the sentence can help you figure out what the blank MIGHT be?

3

Multiple Choice

From John Hersey’s Hiroshima - “He became an ______, mechanically wiping, daubing, winding, wiping, daubing, winding.”

Which vocab word best fits in the blank?

1

automaton

2

antithesis (a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else)

3

nonchalance

4

introversion

4

I hope you chose letter b!

  • an automaton is a robot (this definition is on your vocab list!)

  • antithesis means the direct opposite of someone/something else, but there's no one else in the sentence to compare the mechanical person to.

  • nonchalance (besides meaning calm or relaxed) doesn't start with a vowel

  • introversion (the state of being an introvert, someone who is more shy or less outgoing than others)

5

Fill in the Blank

From Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring - “Honey Bees become wildly agitated and _______ on contact with it.”

What clues from the sentence tell us what the word in the blank MIGHT be?

6

Multiple Choice

From Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring - “Honey Bees become wildly agitated and _______ on contact with it.”

1

biomorphic

2

eccentric

3

matriarchal ( an older woman who is powerful within a family or organization)

4

bellicose

7

We were looking for something to do with agitated.

  • biomorphic (according to the vocab definitions) = a shape based on nature. Doesn't sound very agitated.

  • eccentric means strange. But weird isn't the same as agitated

  • Moms CAN BE agitated, but you don't need to be nervous or upset to be a mom. :)

  • bellicose means aggressive. Someone/something that is upset may be aggressive, so this makes the most sense!

8

Fill in the Blank

From Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Why We Can’t Wait - “We were not ______ advocating lawlessness.”

What clues do we have about what the word for the blank might be?

9

Multiple Choice

From Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Why We Can’t Wait - “We were not ______ advocating lawlessness.”

1

Anarchists

2

belligerents

3

centrists (a person who has moderate political views)

4

Audiophiles

10

I hope that you had a 50/50 chance of getting this right!

  • Someone who is an anarchist doesn't believe in law or authorities, so they WOULD want lawlessness.

  • belligerents are people who are angry (but not necessarily illegal anger...)

  • centrists would DEFINITELY not be up for illegal things

  • audiophiles like good quality sound, but that has nothing to do with lawlessness, either.
