The STAFF has 5 lines and 4 spaces. We start at the bottom and count UP to identify the line or space.

3

Line Names

A note is on a line if the line goes through the middle of the note.

Starting at the bottom and going up, the names of the lines are E, G, B, D, F. You can remember that with Every Good Boy Does Fine, or any other phrase you would like to use that spells out E, G, B, D, and F.

The notes are read left to right, just like the way you read words.

Start with the note on the left. It is on the 3rd line. If we count up from the bottom, E, G, B, we stop on B. That note is on the B line, so the pitch is B.

The next note is the one on the bottom line. Counting up from the bottom, the first line is E, so the note is on the E line. That means the letter name, or pitch of that note is E.

The third note, as we move to the right, is on the 4th line from the bottom. E, G, B, D. We stop on D, so the note is on the D line. This pitch is a D.

Space notes spell out the word FACE.

Space Names

The area BETWEEN two lines is the space. There are 4 spaces on the staff.

Starting with the first note on the left, we see that the note head (circle part) is between two lines, so we know it is a space note. It is in the 2nd space from the bottom, so counting up from the bottom, F, A, it is in the A space. The pitch of this note is A.

12

The next note is on the top space, or the 4th space. Counting up from the bottom, F, A, C, E, we see that this note is in the E space, therefore the pitch name of the note is E.

13

The third note in this measure is on the bottom space. The bottom space is F, so any notes anywhere on that space will be Fs.

Slide image

14

The final note in the measure, the one on the far right, is on the third space. Counting up from the bottom, F, A, C, we see that the note head lands in the C space, making that pitch a C.
