2

Vocabulary

  • Integers: a set of numbers that include whole numbers, positive numbers, and negative numbers.

3

2 Rules of Integers: There are two rules that you must follows when adding integers. You must look at the signs of each number that you are adding to determine which rules to use!

  • Rule 1: When adding integers with signs that are the same, ADD the numbers and keep the sing.

  • Rule 2: When adding integers with signs that are different, subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the number with the largest absolute value.

4

Examples:

  • Rule 1: -3 + (-2) = -5...add 3+2 to get 5 then keep the sign. -5

  • Rule 2: Rule 1: 4 + (-2) = 2... subtract 4-2 to get 2 then keep the sign 4 positive because it's bigger

  • Rule 1: -8 + (-2) = -5...add 8 + 2 to get 10 then keep the sign -10

  • Rule 2: -5 + 11 = 6...subtract 11-5 to get 6 then keep the sign of the 11 because it's bigger

5

PRACTICE

  • 9 + (-14) =

  • -12 + (-10) =

  • 16 + (-16) =

  • -8 + (-8) =

6

Challenge

  • 13 + (-5) + 8 =

  • -4 + 6 + (-8) =

  • -12 + (-7) + (-5) =
