Vocabulary:

Variable: A quantity that can change. Letters are used to represent these changing, unknown quantities. 

Constant: A value that doesn't change, a fixed value. A number that is added to or 

subtracted from a variable. 

Coefficient: A number multiplied by a variable. 

Inverse Operation: An operation that undoes what was done by the previous operation.

Vocabulary:

Equation: a mathematical statement that two things are equal. It consists of two 

expressions, one on each side of an 'equals' sign. 

Solution: A value, or values, we can put in place of a variable (such as x) that makes the equation true. 

Isolate the Variable: using the inverse operations to undo addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to the variable alone on one side of the equal sign.  

Balance: To maintain equal values on both sides of the equal sign.
