PAST SIMPLE TENSE

  • The basic form of Past Tense.

  • For example: They went for Sushi yesterday.

  • This tense is used to describe an event that happened in the past.

  • Formation: S + V + ed + O

  • Some verbs are irregular so, it does not end with ed.

  • for example: Go - went, see - saw, sing - sang

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

  • Also known as Past Progressive

  • It occurs when describing 2 events that was happening at the same time or an event that was happening before it was disrupted.

  • For example: He was showering when the robbery happened.

  • Formation: S + Was/ Were + Present Participle + O

  • When it is asked as a question, Was/Were switches with the Subject.

PAST PERFECT TENSE

  • It is used to explain something that has happened in the past before another past event.

  • For example: She had gone to the bar before the raid happened.

  • Formation: S + had + Past Participle + O

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

  • Another name for it is Past Perfect Progressive.

  • It is used to describe an event that had started in the past and continued to another point in the past.

  • Formation: S + had + been + present participle + O

  • For example: The baby had been crying for over 20 minutes when the mother finally carried her.
