A biological weapon in Vietnam

Agent Orange was one of the herbicides that U.S. forces sprayed over the rural landscape in Vietnam from 1961 to 1971 that defoliate trees and kill food fields that were providing cover and food to Vietnamese forces. It remained toxic for only days or weeks and then degraded, but it had a toxic contaminant, dioxin, that is still causing health problems in Vietnam. The chemical companies that produced the Vietnam-era herbicides say they were unaware how toxic the dioxin contaminant was. About a 60 percent of the herbicides used in Vietnam was Agent Orange. More than 43 million liters (11,4 million gallons) of it was used from 1962 to 1970. The concentrations of chemicals were 20 to 55 times more than normal agricultural use for killing plants ( the herbicide was first used in 1946 and by the 1950's it was in widespread use).

3

The Agent Orange and other herbicides were sprayed over 24 percent of southern Vietnam, destroying 5 million acres of highlands and forests, and about 500.000 acres of crops. Of these areas, 34 percent were sprayed more than once and one study found that 3,181 villages were sprayed as well. Today, decades after American forces sprayed the Agent Orange in South Vietnam, some children living in the region continue to suffer from the horrifying effects of the chemical. The third generation Agent Orange victims are nowadays battling dozen of serious illnesses, physical deformities and mental disorders.

1

Companies that developed this herbicide didn´t know its effect.

2

Because it was stranger than herbicides than herbicides commonly used.

3

Agent Orange remained toxic for only some days or weeks.

4

Because it had been used by farmers since the 1940's
