Sentence Parts

All sentences have two parts: a SUBJECT (tells whom or what the sentence is talking about or who or what is doing something) and a PREDICATE (tells what the subject is or does).

2

The subject is usually found in the beginning part of a sentence.

*However, it can also be found in the middle or at the end of a sentence, too.

  • My aunt Molly is a very nice person.

  • Aunt Molly takes me to the mall to shop.

  • Every Friday afternoon, Aunt Molly drives us both to La Plaza Mall. (subject is in the middle)

  • Shopping and eating at the mall on Fridays is where you can find Aunt Molly. (subject is at the end)

3

The predicate part of a sentence begins with a verb (either an action or being word).

Action words tell the reader what the subject does.

Examples: read, write, talk, run, walk, etc.

Being words tell the reader what the subject has or is.

Examples: is, are, was, were, have, has, had, will have, etc.
