Making Questions

We use the auxiliar "did" for making questions.

Did you visit the museum?

When we use the word did, the verb remains in the simple form. You do not have to use it in past because the word did (the auxiliar) is already in past.

14

Past Progressive

  • We use the past of verb to be (was, were) and the verb in gerund (ended in -ing)

  • I was reading a book....

  • It needs a second sentence: in simple past or past progressive

  • I was reading a book when you phoned me

  • I was reading a book while you were cooking dinner.

  • The past progressive cannot stand alone, the second sentence is mandatory.

15

No second sentence special case

  • If the past progressive has the time of action, no second sentence is needed

  • At ten o'clock I was reading a book.

  • It implies a continuous action in the past

  • Past progressive is also known as past continuous
