Math Vocabulary from Chapter 1 & 2

ADDENDS

Addends are the numbers being added together. (highlighted in yellow here)

ADD

To join together to find the total or SUM. Opposite of subtraction.

Count Back

On a number line, start at the greater number and move back by the other number

Count on

On a number line , start at the greater addend and move FORWARD by the other addend.

Doubles

Two addends that are the SAME

Difference

The answer to a subtraction problem.

Fact Family

Addition and subtraction sentences that use the SAME numbers. (commutative property)

SUM

The answer to an addition problem

Subtract

Take away, take apart, separate or find the difference between two sets. Opposite of addition.

Array

Objects displayed in rows and columns.

EVEN numbers

An even number ends or has in the one's position with 0,2,4,6,8. Always has a partner.

ODD numbers

An odd number has 1 left over-a lone ranger. Numbers end (ones position) with 1,3,5,7,9

Skip Count

To use the SAME addend over and over-pattern.

Repeated Addition

To use the same number to add over and over

Equal Groups

Each group has the same number of objects
