  • Needle cap: protects the needle

  • Shaft: the long part of needle

  • Bevel: slanted, open area of needle

  • Hub: attaches needle to syringe

Types of Syringes

  • Luer-Lok™ tip:

    Has a threaded tip to hold the hub of the needle securely

  • Slip tip:

    Standard syringe tip

  • Eccentric tip:

    Used to get a straighter angle for IV injections

  • Catheter tip:

    Used to administer oral medications and liquefied food

Reading a Syringe

  • Step 1: Determine the number of spaces along the calibrated scale.

  • Step 2: Take the number of spaces and divide by the largest mark that is numbered on the barrel.

  • Step 3: Read the top ring on the piston.
