Estimation and Whole Number Operations

Estimation Strategies

  • Front End Estimation: Looking at greatest place value and rounding based on that. Example: 49,865 + 13,509 ---> 50,000 + 10,000

  • Clustering: Used when numbers all "cluster" around a certain amount. Example: 746 + 751 + 756 ---> 750 + 750 + 750

  • Compatible Numbers: using numbers that are close to familiar amounts (think money). Example: 109 + 47 + 26 ---> 100 + 50 + 25

Multiplication of Whole Numbers

  • Start with the bottom factor with the place value farthest to the right. Multiply the digit by each digit of the top factor, starting on the right and moving left until you multiply by all of the numbers.

  • Do not forget to drop your zero when you move to the next digit of the bottom factor.

  • Add your partial products together while making sure your place values are lined up nicely.

Long Division of Whole Numbers

  • Set up your problem with the dividend "inside the house" and the divisor "outside the house".

  • Make your multiple list using repeated addition of your divisor.

  • Follow the division steps: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Check, Bring Down

  • Make sure there is a digit above each digit of your dividend to ensure your quotient is complete.
