What Makes a Main Character
· Has a Backstory: An interesting main character has a strong backstory that makes him/her stand apart from other characters in the book.
· Is a Round Character: The main character should be a round character who has strengths and weaknesses and be multi-layered. As a reader, you’re rooting for him/her but don’t necessarily agree with or like everything about him/her.
· Is a Dynamic Character: The main character should transform across the story and be “different” in many ways by the end of the story than he/she was in the beginning.
· Works to Meet Goals: The main character should have a major goal, or maybe even multiple goals, that he/she is working toward. Often times, these goals lead the main character on a quest or journey throughout the plot of the book.
