In music, we use Italian terms to describe how "Loud" or "Quiet" the music should be.

Here are some examples in the picture on the right.

Crescendo

• pronounced "CRESH-EN-DOUGH"

• this symbol tells us that the music should slowly grow stronger

• starts small and grows larger

Decrescendo

• pronounced "DAY-CRESH-EN-DOUGH"

• this symbol tells us that the music should slowly grow quieter

• starts large and grows smaller

Here are some of the Italian terms you might see for dynamic levels.

FORTE

Forte means "strong"

f - loud or strong

ff - very loud or strong

fff - very, very loud!

PIANO

Piano means "gentle"

p -quiet/soft

pp - very quiet

ppp - very, very quiet
