Mutation

• Definition: A sudden permanent change in the amont, arrangement or structure of the DNA of an organism OR

• A sudden permanent change in gene or chromosome in an organism

Mutagen

• An agent that induces changes in DNA and causes mutation

• 2 types; Physical agent & Chemical agent

Physical agent

 High energy radiation such as X-rays, UV rays, α ray, β ray, gamma rays

Chemical agent

Colchicine, ethidium bromide, proflavin, mustard gas, ethylene amine, ethyl-methyl sulphonate (EMS)

Mutant

An organism carrying a gene that has undergone a mutation shows new phenotype as a result from mutation
