[ITAL] Routing data in network

media

2

Objectives

  • Learn the need of switching

  • Describe circuit, packet and message switching

3

What is switching

  • The process to channel the one device with another device to allow data transmission

  • e.g. When you call on a phone, a communication channel is setup from your phone to the receiver

4

So how is telephone (landline) switch?

  • manual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVDGuCjog_0

  • auto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3WjgonQiJk

5

6

Circuit switching

  • A physical network path is setup before communication starts

  • The connection channel is dedicated to the session

  • The channel will be released once transmission complete

7

Packet Switching

  • Data are splitted into smaller chunk, called packets

  • Packet will include header data to identifies the source, destination and other control data

  • Each packet will take its own route from source to destination

  • On the Internet, packets are routed by router, a network that forward packet to destinations

9

Open Ended

Describe one benefit for Packet switching compare to circuit switching

10

Multiple Choice

Which switching method make better usage of the bandwidth?

1

Circuit

2

Packet

3

No difference

11

Bandwidth

  • Sometimes refer as transmission rate

  • Measures how much data a channel is capable of transmitting

  • Usually measured in bits per second (bps)

12

Multiple Select

Which of the followings are true for packet switching?

1

Communication channel is shared

2

All packets use same path

3

Dedicated channel connection is required

4

Allows better utility of the bandwidth

13

Message switching

  • Transmit whole set of data from source to destination

  • No predefined route

  • Data sent to one node and is temporarily store in the node, and later forward to another node

  • Also known as: Store and forward

14

Open Ended

Do you think message switching is suitable for real-time communications (e.g. games)? Explain.

15

More about message switching

  • Slow, but can avoid traffic congestion

  • Not suitable for real time communications

  • Email is sometimes sent in this method, where the email hop from one server to another
