Why is it important?

Socialization is important because:

• Critical both to individuals and to the societies in which they live. It illustrates how completely intertwined human beings and their social worlds are.

• Through teaching culture to a new member is how culture perpetuates.

• Social interaction provides the means via which we gradually become able to see ourselves through the eyes of others, and how we learn who we are and how we fit into the world around us.

• Literally we would have no self

How does the process occur?

Family

• The most important socialization agent

• Nurture in early childhood

• Parents give social identity(race and class)

School

• Set up behavior, teamwork,following schedules

• Join the family in socializing gender

• First experience with bureaucracy

Peer Groups

• social group whose members have interests,social position and age in common.

• Learn to form relationships

• They influence us

• anticipatory socialization: learning that helps a person achieve a desired position.

Mass Media

• means for delivering impersonal communications to a vast audience.

• Television, Internet,films,computer programs,newspaper,radio

• It has influence on attitudes and behavior

Resocialization: Total Institutions

• a setting in which people are isolated from the rest of society and manipulated by an administrative staff.

• Supervise all aspects of daily life,controlled and standarized, formal rules

• radically changing an inmate´s personality by carefully controlling the environment.

• Prisons and mental hospitals
