Many people think Columbus discovered America. That's only partly true.

Native Americans were already here. So you can't discover something already found.

The first person, other than Native Americans, may have been a viking named Leif Erickson.

We give Columbus so much credit because it was Columbus' voyage that started the exploration and colonization of the Americas.

The Voyage

He set sail on August 3, 1492, with three ships named the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The voyage was long and difficult.

Finding Land

On October 12, 1492 land was spotted. It was a small island in the Bahamas that Columbus would name San Salvador.
