8
Syme (page 49)
"In an intellectual way, Syme was venomously orthodox. He would talk with a disagreeable gloating satisfaction of helicopter raids on enemy villages, the trial and confessions of thought-criminals, the executions in the cellars of the Ministry of Love. Talking to him was largely a matter of getting him away from such subjects and entangling him, if possible, in the technicalities of Newspeak, on which he was authoritative and interesting."
9
Syme
In short, Syme is a "robot" who doesn't disobey Big Brother at all.
Winston finds him a bore and they end up talking about a recent public hanging.
Syme says, "I think it spoils it when they tie their feet together. I like to see them kicking. And above all, at the end, the tongue sticking right out, and blue - a quite bright blue."
10
Multiple Choice
Which part of speech is Syme currently working on in the 11th Edition of the Newspeak Dictionary?
Nouns
Verbs
Pronouns
Adjectives
11
Newspeak Dictionary
Syme claims that this is the "definitive edition"
Rather than inventing new words, he says that their job is to destroy words. Hundreds of them every single day.
"The 11th Edition won't contain a single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050."
Turn to page 51 (I'll read the section about 'good')
12
Fill in the Blank
On page 52, Syme explains that "...the whole aim of Newspeak is to (blank).
13
Open Ended
Why would a government/leader want to "narrow the range of thought"?
14
Newspeak
Syme explains, "...that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now..."
The slogans of the party will even change because "freedom is slavery" can't exist if the term and concept of "freedom" has been abolished.
15
Open Ended
Open to page 53! Why does Winston feel that Syme will be vaporized someday?
