Athens- Near the Sea, on the Mainland
Sparta- Inland, on the Peloponneus

Athens:
Navy (fighting on sea with boats)
Sparta:
Army (fighting on land with soldiers)

Sparta- could own land and have a job, Had to be strong to defend their land

Athens- Treated respectfully, given job training, could be policeman, teachers, artists, clerks
Sparta- Treated poorly, beaten or killed, prisoners of war

Athens- purpose: good citizens, taught reading, writing, math, Lit., sports, music. Boys only. Military traning began at 18.
Sparta- purpose: protect Sparta, taught sports, bravery, withstand pain, Boys and girls, Military training began at 7
