Why was there a Civil War?
Rusere died in 1620 and left no clear succession.
War broke out between his two most powerful chiefs as they fought for control of the throne.
These two men were Kapararidze, Rusere's brother, and Rusere's son, called Mavura Mhande.

The war raged on between Mavura and his uncle Kapararidze for nine long years.
In 1629 Mavura turned to the Portuguese for help in deposing his uncle. He became a Christian and promised the Portuguese the right to establish trading posts and mission stations in the Mutapa State.
He took a Christian name: Felipe.

Mavura Mhande Felipe decisively defeated his uncle in battle in 1631 and became Monomutapa.
With Potuguese assistance he ruled with absolute authority and power for the rest of his reign.
He also swore allegiance to the King of Portugal and so the Mutapa Empire became a vassal of Portugal. They now paid tax to the King of Portugal.
