What are the indefinite articles 'a' and 'an'?

3

Indefinite articles 'a' & 'an'

  • 'a' is used for words which begin with a consonant sound. For example: a building, a dragon, a giant basket.

  • 'an' is used for words which begin with a vowel sound or a silent 'h'. For example: an architect, an earthquake, an hour.

  • We do not put a or an before a plural noun because 'a' and 'an' means one.

  • Exceptions: We do not use 'an' before a word that begins with a vowel that make a 'y' sound. We use 'a' instead. Example: a unicorn, a university, a used car.
