What is the difference between RESPIRATION and BREATHING.

3

RESPIRATION vs BREATHING

  • Breathing is a biophysical process that involves the exchange of gases through inhalation and exhalation

  • Respiration is a biochemical process to release energy from organic compounds which are then used for performing different physical activities.

Structure of the human respiratory system

  • Pharynx- is part of the conducting zone for air into the lungs.Main function is to warm and humidify air before it reaches the lungs.

  • Larynx- to protect the airway from choking on material in the throat. To regulate the flow of air into our lungs The production of sounds used for speech.

6

Structure of the human respiratory system

  • Trachea- also called the windpipe, cartilaginous tube that connects the larynx  to the bronchi of the lungs

  • Bronchi- the airways that lead from the trachea into the lungs

7

Structure of the human respiratory system

  • Alveoli- where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out. also called as air sac.

  • Diaphragm- located below the lungs, is the major muscle of respiration.

Definition of terms:

  • Respiration: a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.

  • Gas exchange: It  is the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream, and the elimination of carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs.

  • Diffusion: the process of a substance spreading out to evenly fill its container or environment.

We now know that…

  • Respiratory system includes trachea, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm, and the muscles between the ribs.

  • Gas exchange is the diffusion of gases into and out of the body

  • Oxygen diffuses from the air sacs into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses the other way.

  • Thin walls of air sacs help gas exchange to take place quickly.
