Synthesize

to put together information from different parts of a text to see the author’s ideas in new ways.

Evidence

clues or details in the text that support an answer or idea.

Theme

the big idea, moral, or lesson of a piece of writing.

Visualize

when a reader creates or pictures images in his or her mind in order to understand a text.

Compare

showing how two or more things are alike.

Contrast

showing how two or more things are different.

Point of view

describes how readers experience a story, either through a character in the story (first-person) or an outside narrator (third-person).

Act

 a chapter in a play that contains more than one scene.

Character tag

in a play, the character’s name in capital letters that indicates that character’s speaking part.

Dialogue

the words that characters in a story or drama say aloud to each other.

Drama

a play or story that is acted out by people in a performance.

Scene

the action in a play that takes place in a single setting.

Setting

where and when a story takes place.

Stage direction

information in a drama that tells actors where to move, how to look or speak, or information about the set.

Transition words

words and phrases that link ideas together.

Persuade

try to convince a person of an idea or get them to do something.

a question asked for effect only and does not require/expect an answer.
