We will begin learning about Islamic Empires in the Middle Ages. Before we read, let's think of things we have learned beofer this new journey.

Do you remember what empire existed in Europe before the Middle Ages?

• The Roman Empire

Do you remember what time period the Middle Ages covered?

• 1000s years ago

• Between 500 CE and 1500 CE

We are learning about the same period of time, but in another part of the world!

This will be the Middle East.

Can you remember any countries we read about in the Middle Ages unit?

• The countries of Europe

• England and France

Do you remember why Jerusalem was mentioned in the Middle Ages unit?

• It was because of the Crusades which was a series of wars that European armies set out to take control of the city of Jerusalem.

They were Emperors!

The ruler of an empire is called an Emperor, but not always.

The rulers of the Islamic empires we will read about in this unit were called caliphs.

So... What is an Empire?

An empire is a group of nations or territories controlled by the same leader.
