It was because of the Crusades which was a series of wars that European armies set out to take control of the city of Jerusalem.

The ruler of an empire is called an Emperor, but not always.
The rulers of the Islamic empires we will read about in this unit were called caliphs.

An empire is a group of nations or territories controlled by the same leader.
