"Danny," said Ms. Lambert, "things have got to change soon. Or

else!" Danny knew she was right. He had been late every day all

week. If he kept it up, she would fire him.

Danny was worried. He had a hard time getting going in the

morning. That made him miss the 7:25 bus. He was late to work

and not ready to get started.

Danny thought hard about what he could do. He got an idea. "I’ll

make a list of all the things I do each morning," he said.

8

He wrote down all the things in order—what he did first, second,

third . . .

Danny thought: "To get to work on time, I have to take the 7:25

bus. So I have to leave the house at 7:15—no later. But just to be

sure, I'll plan to leave at 7:10.

"Now I'll figure how long it takes me to do each thing on the list.

Then I can tell what time I'll have to get up so I can leave at 7:10."

Danny figured out he'd have to get up each morning at 6:00. So

he set his alarm and went to bed early.

9

On Monday, Danny’s list looked like this:

The next morning, Danny got up at 6:00. He checked off each

step as he got it done. He was on time for work.

Danny did the same the rest of the week. Ms. Lambert was surprised.

She was happy, too. Danny was even happier. He was going

to keep his job!
