Composers Please

  • During this period the most recognizable composers were;

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • Joseph Haydn

An example of the two

  • Haydn's Divertimento in Bb for Wind Quintet

  • Mozart's Eine Kliene Nachtmusik

  • Which do you prefer?

6

Defining Features of the Classical Period

  • The classical period was known for creative and beautiful melodies as composers experimented further with their craft.

  • The creation and use of Homophonic Accompaniments.

  • This is where other instruments would -play the same part as the melody in order to give the main idea more emphasis or POWER

7

Other Features of the Classical Period

  • A technique was created called Alberti Bass. This was where accompanying chords were broken up into their individual notes and played as a separate harmony

  • Melodies became more exotic with the use of Ornamentation where musicians would do trills, turns or other techniques to make effect like sounds.

Types of Classical Music

  • The Symphony - Played by an orchestra and has four movements. Each with a different tempo and mood.

  • Concerto - A work for solo instrument with an orchestra as the accompaniment with added cadenzas

  • Cadenza - An ornamented passage that is played by the soloist, a chance for the musician to show off.

  • Chamber Music - A work for a small group of solo instruments e.g wind ensemble, string quartets etc.

  • The divertimento we heard earlier is an example of chamber music

11

One of my personal favourite concertos

  • Mozart's Clarinet Concerto

12

The Structure of Music

  • As was said at the beginning of the unit, music began to get more complex in its construction over time.

  • This structure came to be known as what we call musical Form

Slide image

13

Forms

  • Binary Form - Is where there are two sections which are different from each other

  • This is defined as AB

14

Ternary Form

  • ABA

  • Ternary meaning two sections are played before returning to the first section

Slide image

15

Rondo Form

  • ABACA where the music has one section which keeps returning and is sandwiched between lots of different sections

Slide image

16

Coda

  • In some of the works in the classical period, composers would add a finale section of roughly 12 bars called a Coda

  • This section would bring the end of the piece and would use either of these two techniques.

  • Rallantando - Gradually slowing down the tempo.

  • Diminuendo - Getting softer graduallly

  • An example of this can be found in Mozarts Ronda Alla Turca
