In order to write something that other people can understand, we need to be able to write correct, complete sentences!

  • sentence fragments

  • run-on sentences

Sentence Fragments

These are NOT COMPLETE sentences. They are missing either a subject, a verb, or predicate (the rest of the sentence)!

Examples of Fragments

  • The ugly blue car

  • My mom and dad

  • In the backyard

  • When I get home

  • For six months

Run-on Sentences

A run-on sentence happens when two complete sentences are squashed together without a conjunction (joining word) or correct punctuation (semicolon). Most of the time, these could be 2 separate sentences.

Examples of run-on sentences

  • She is going to get food at McDonalds she is really hungry.

  • I'm so tired of cleaning up after everyone they never clear their dishes from the table.

  • My mom told me to comb my hair I look like I just rolled out of bed.
