What is Catholic beauty? Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI often spoke of the “pressing need of our time” to be “struck and overcome by the beauty of Christ.”

All forms of art either predispose the soul to virtue or to vice. Therefore, it is important that we actively discern what media we consume (and in the case of creative people, what media we create).

Discussion Questions

  • • What role does art and media play in your life?

  • • How often do you listen to music, for example?

  • What impact does music, films, and social media have in our daily lives (both positive and negative)?

  • Do you believe that you are called to allow God to make something beautiful out of your life, regardless of whether or not you have a single creative atom in your being?

  • Think about the beauty of holiness around you. Has the witness of people (or even saints) and the beauty of their lives inspired you to holiness?

“The challenge can be defned simply: Throughout the Western world, the culture no longer carries the faith, because the culture has become increasingly hostile to the faith. Catholicism can no longer be absorbed by osmosis from the environment, for the environment has become toxic. So we can no longer sit back and assume that decent lives lived in conformity with the prevailing cultural norms will somehow convey the faith to our children and grandchildren and invite others to consider entering the Church. No, in our new situation, Catholicism has to be proposed, and Catholicism has to be lived in radical fdelity to Christ and the Gospel. Recreational Catholicism - Catholicism as a traditional, leisure-time activity absorbing perhaps ninety minutes of one’s time on a weekend - is over.

11

Full-time Catholicism - a Catholicism that, as the Second Vatican Council taught, infuses all of life and calls everyone in the Church to holiness and mission -is the only possible Catholicism in the twenty-frst century.”
