We can avoid repetition in our speech through 3 options:

• 1 Eliminate words after modals.

• 2 Reduce infinitives

• 3 Synonyms in context

Eliminate words after modals

• They wanted us to answer their questions, but we couldn't (answer their questions)

• A: They should give you a rise! You deserve it.

• B: Well, I certainly haven't been (given a rise). I'll demand it!
