What is inclusive education?
To understand what inclusive education is, perhaps, first, it is easier to look at what it is not.
Inclusion is not:
•Exclusion: Exclusion is where a learner is denied access to education. E.g. a child being unable to join the school.
•Segregation: Segregation is where learners are provided education, but this is in a separate environment to their peers.
•E.g. special schools or units
•Integration: Learners are taught in the mainstream classroom, but there are no adjustments for the child.
•E.g. in order to access the lesson the child must adapt which the teaching and assessment remains the same.
4
Inclusion
•Inclusion is when all learners are educated within the regular classroom alongside peers of the same age.
•Barriers to inclusion, such as the instruction, assessment , environment and curriculum, are identified adjusted to ensure that all students can access the learning.
5
In 2016 the United Nations explain define inclusion as
‘. . . a process of systemic reform embodying changes and modifications in content, teaching methods, approaches, structures and strategies in education to overcome barriers with a vision serving to provide all students of the relevant age range with an equitable and participatory learning experience and environment that best corresponds to their requirements and preferences.’ (United Nations, 2016, para 11)
