Introduction:

England fought in the French and Indian war because they wanted to increase its world power and benefit economically from trade with the colonies (this means they wanted to be able to make money and get rich from trade with the colonies).

3

Instead.....

Instead of getting rich, Great Britain fought a long, hard far-from-home, expensive war to protect its American colonies. The French and Indian War emptied Great Britain's treasury (the funds that the government had).

British takes over many colonies that were established by a charter.

So, what is a charter?

  • the land that colonists were allowed to settle or live on.

  • colonists' responsibilities

  • rules and rights of the colonists in the new colonies

  • the way colonists could participate in making rules and decisions

  • said that colonists in the New World were still British subjects and had a duty to be loyal to the British crown.

British Control over the Colonies

Over time, Great Britain took control of their colonies, and colonies originally begun by a charter became royal colonies. As royal colonies, they no longer operated based on their charter. Instead, the King of England and the British Parliament now made the rules. Before the French and Indian war, Great Britain had let the colonies take care of themselves and work on their own to solve their problems. But after the French and Indian War, Great Britain decided they needed to have more control over the colonies. So, Great Britain got serious about its imperial policy.

8

Two Big Way that British took control:

  • Economic Control

  • Political Control

9

Econmic Control

  • Taxes

  • Trade

Taxes

Great Britain taxed the colonies heavily after the French and Indian war.

Taxes were issued on all kinds of things the colonists used.

Great Britain issued taxes on sugar, tea and even paper!

Trade

The colonies traded raw materials for goods that would be made in Great Britain. (A material that has not yet been changed in any way is called a raw material)

Great Britian wanted to buy the raw materials as cheap as possible and then use them to make goods.

Great Britian would then sell these goods that they made to the colonists and sell them for as much as possible!

Political Control

  • Control through government with its imperial policy

  • This means that Great Britain started enforcing new rules for the colonies to follow.

14

Before Great Britain had political control...

The colonists needed a local government to deal with everyday issues since Great Britain was all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. Colonists established colonial legislatures to make laws for each colony.

15

After Great Britain wanted political control...

The king of England, appointed a colonial governor in each colony. Colonial governors were in the highest position of authority in the colonies. The colonial governors monitored the colonial legislatures and enforced British laws.

However, some colonists resented the power of the colonial governors-- along with all the other controls-- and resistance to imperial policy began!
