Define & Ideate
Practicing the "define" and "ideate" stages of the Design for Change process!

2
The Define Stage
The designer starts the "define" stage after doing empathy work. In the define stage, the designer is ready to get specific about the design opportunity. The designer names what the user needs, why they need it, and what's stopping them from getting it.
3
Multiple Choice
In the "define" stage, what does the designer do?
Gets clear about what the users need & what's stopping them from getting it
Brainstorms as many solutions as possible to the problem at hand
Works to deeply understan the users and their needs through interviews, surveys, or observations
Creates a small-scale version of one possible solution to the problem
4
Users
In order to "define" correctly, a designer needs to be aware of who their users are. In any design opportunity, there are main users and secondary users. The main users are the group of people who the design is primarily for, and who will be primarily affected by the design. The secondary users are also connected to the situation, but not as closely.
5
Multiple Choice
In our current project (high school sports and the pandemic), who are the main users?
high school student athletes
college recruiters
high school teachers
college student athletes
6
Multiple Choice

College sports recruiters
All of the above
7

8
Poll
In your opinion, what's the main reason why high school student athletes need the opportunity to play sports?
The opportunity to receive college scholarships in the future
The opportunity to feel a sense of purpose from being part of something bigger than yourself
The opportunity to improve as an athlete by learning and practicing more skills
The opportunity to learn and practice life skills (time management, teamwork, etc.)
9
The Ideation Stage
When a designer ideates, they come up with a lot of ideas related to the design opportunity. The goal of ideating is to generate a lot of options so that the designer can choose from many options when deciding where to go next.
10
Multiple Choice
In the "ideate" stage, what does the designer do?
Gets clear about what the users need & what's stopping them from getting it
Brainstorms as many solutions as possible to the problem at hand
Works to deeply understan the users and their needs through interviews, surveys, or observations
Creates a small-scale version of one possible solution to the problem
11
Open Ended
What is one possible solution for our current design opportunity?
12
