What is a preposition?
A preposition is a word that shows the relation between a noun or a pronoun and other words in a sentence.
Examples: beside, in front of etc.
4
Object of a Preposition
All prepositions have objects. The object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition in a sentence.
Difference between preposition and adverb:
If a preposition does not have an object it is not a preposition, it's probably an adverb. A preposition always has an object. An adverb never has an object.
Example:
They are in the kitchen. (preposition in has object the kitchen)
Please come in. (adverb in has no object; it qualifies come)

Preposition of Time
A preposition of time allows to discuss a specific time period such as a date on the calendar, one of the days of the week, or the actual time something takes place. Prepositions of time are the same words as prepositions of place, however they are used in a different way.
6
Points to remember
The golden preposition rule: A preposition is followed by a noun or a pronoun. It is NEVER followed by a verb.
A preposition must have an object.
The name “preposition” indicates that a preposition (usually) comes before something (its object).
A pronoun following a preposition should be in object form. The noun or pronoun that follows a preposition forms a ‘prepositional object’. If it is a pronoun, it should therefore be in the objective form (me, her, them), not subjective form (I, she, they)
