Normally when we make a noun plural we add an "s" to the end of a word

  • Dog becomes dogs

  • Cookie becomes cookies

  • Boy becomes boys

  • Swing becomes swings

If a word ends in s, x, ch, or sh, we add an es at the end of the word to make it plural.

  • Bench becomes benches

  • Fox becomes foxes

  • Wish becomes wishes

  • Bus becomes buses

When a noun ends in a y, we usually add an ies to make it plural.

  • Baby becomes babies

  • Lady becomes ladies

  • Fly becomes flies

When an irregular noun becomes plural, we have to change the word in a different way.

  • Child becomes children

  • Quiz becomes Quizzes

  • Woman becomes women

  • Mouse becomes mice

When trying out a noun to figure out how it becomes plural, it may help to read the sentence out loud.

  • In the following sentence, change the word leaf to make plural.

  • The leaf blew across my yard.

  • The leafs blew across my yard. (That doesn't sound quite right.)

  • The leaves blew across my yard. (That sounds much better.)
