Normally when we make a noun plural we add an "s" to the end of a word
Dog becomes dogs
Cookie becomes cookies
Boy becomes boys
Swing becomes swings

If a word ends in s, x, ch, or sh, we add an es at the end of the word to make it plural.
Bench becomes benches
Fox becomes foxes
Wish becomes wishes
Bus becomes buses

When a noun ends in a y, we usually add an ies to make it plural.
Baby becomes babies
Lady becomes ladies
Fly becomes flies

When an irregular noun becomes plural, we have to change the word in a different way.
Child becomes children
Quiz becomes Quizzes
Woman becomes women
Mouse becomes mice

When trying out a noun to figure out how it becomes plural, it may help to read the sentence out loud.
In the following sentence, change the word leaf to make plural.
The leaf blew across my yard.
The leafs blew across my yard. (That doesn't sound quite right.)
The leaves blew across my yard. (That sounds much better.)
