Conjunctions

The word that joins words or two parts of a sentence is called a Conjunction. Conjunctions only join, they do no other work.

Example:

The bird can fly. The bird can hop.

Using conjunction 'and'

The bird can fly and hop.

AND is a connecting word that tells you more

Here and is used to join the words sing and dance and tell us that Rita can sing as well as dance.

But is a connecting word that makes a contrast/opposite between two or more sentences.

  2. He dropped the bat.

He hit the ball but dropped the bat.

Here but is used to join the sentences with unlike ideas.
