Conjunctions

The word that joins words or two parts of a sentence is called a Conjunction. Conjunctions only join, they do no other work.

Example:

The bird can fly. The bird can hop.

Using conjunction 'and'

The bird can fly and hop.

The conjunctions we are going to learn are :

and but

The words and, but are joining words or conjunctions. They are used to join words as well as sentences.

AND

AND is a connecting word that tells you more

Example:

Rita can sing. Rita can dance

Rita can sing and dance!

Here and is used to join the words sing and dance and tell us that Rita can sing as well as dance.

BUT

But is a connecting word that makes a contrast/opposite between two or more sentences.

Example:

1. He hit the ball.
2. He dropped the bat.

He hit the ball but dropped the bat.

Here but is used to join the sentences with unlike ideas.
