  • There are 3 types of matter

  • Element

  • Compounds

  • Mixtures

3

Element

  • Made up of only one kind of atom

  • Example; Iron. Made up of atoms of iron

  • Example; Gold. Made up of atoms of gold

4

Compound

  • Two different elements combine together to make compound.

  • The amount of different elements are always fixed.

  • Example; Water. H2O. Two atoms of hydrogen always combines with one atom of Oxygen to form water. This ratio of Hydrogen to Oxygen is always the same.

  • Example : Table Salt. NaCl. (Na = Sodium, Cl = Chlorine ). 1 atom of the element Sodium combines with 1 atom of the element Chlorine to form Table Salt. This ratio of Sodium (Na) to Chlorine ( Cl ) is always the same.

5

Mixture

  • Formed by simply mixing two or more substances, elements or compounds

  • For example, Lemonade. It is made by simply mixing lemon juice, water and sugar in different proportions. There is no fixed amount of the ingredients.

  • In a mixture, the amount of substances are not always fixed.
