Medieval Literature

The Canterbury Tales ranks as one of the greatest poetic works in English. Chaucer also contributed importantly in the second half of the 14th century

His characteristics works are variety in subject matter, genre, tone, and style, and in the complexities presented concerning human pursuit of a sensible existence (love, earthy, divine)

Characteristics of the literature

• French influence: inspired by French poetry of the period produced partly in England and in French

• Experimented numerous lyric forms which had been performed by French poets

• About medieval love and medieval religion
