Chapter 7 Cellular Respiration
2
Cellular Respiration
Cellular Respiration is a series of chemical reactions that convert the energy in food molecules into a usable form of energy called ATP.
All organisms require energy to survive.
Energy is in the chemical bonds in food molecules.
Glucose molecules break down during cellular respiration.
*This process requires oxygen, produces water & carbon dioxide as waste products. This occurs in the cytoplasm & mitochondria of cells.

What is the energy that is formed during cellular respiration?
ATP
ATM

Where in the cells does cellular respiration take place?
nucleus
mitochondria
algae
lungs
6
Why is cellular respiration important?
If your body did not break down the food you eat through cellular respiration, you would not have energy to do anything.
Plants produce sugar, but without cellular respiration, plants could not grow, reproduce, or repair tissue.

Photosyntheis
Photosynthesis requires light energy along with the reactants, carbon dioxide and water.
The products, or end results, of photosynthesis are oxygen and glucose (energy rich molecules).
Most plants, some protists, & some bacteria carry on photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts.
9
Multiple Choice
The reactants in photosynthesis are
Light energy, oxygen
oxygen, carbon dioxide
light energy, carbon dioxide, and water
water, energy, & ATP
10
Multiple Choice
In which organelle does Photosynthesis occur?
mitochondria
chloroplasts
leaves
skin cells
11
Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration requires the reactants glucose and oxygen.
Cellular respiration products are carbon dioxide and water, and releases energy in the form of ATP.
Most organisms carry on cellular respiration.
12
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are interrelated.
Life on Earth depends on a balance of these two processes.
