Introduction

  • In the late 1500s, England and Spain were bitter rivals.

  • England was jealous of Spain’s rich American colonies.

  • Queen Elizabeth I of England hoped to establish an English colony in North America. It took many years, and several failures, before a successful colony took root.

Roanoke

  • Sir Walter Raleigh, the queen’s advisor, sent an exploring party to Virginia in 1584. The first settlers arrived at Roanoke Island a year later. 

  • The colonists depended on American Indians for food. After a drought, many starved. The survivors returned to England.

​The Jamestown instructions also spelled out how many colonists should build houses and how many should plant crops. Others were to hunt for gold or to search rivers that might be a shortcut to the riches of Asia.

The colonist even received tips on how to treat Native Americans. They were told you must have great care not to offend the naturals (Native Americans).

Support After the Starving Time

Profit and Peace

The colony was not making money. In 1612, John Rolfe introduced a specific type of tobacco plant to the colony. The tobacco grew well in the Virginia soil. In 1614, Rolfe married Pocahontas. Their marriage helped keep the peace between the English and Powhatans for several years. This allowed Jamestown to grow larger and stronger.
