Adding, Subtracting, and Multiplying Fractions! :)

Add/Subtract Fractions Review

• Find a common denominator (Think: Big M)

• Make equivalent fractions using the common denominator.

• Rewrite the problem using the equivalent fractions you made.

• Add or subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same.

• Check to see if the answer can simplify!

Adding Mixed Numbers Review

• Write the problem vertically.

• Add the fractions as you normally would (see previous slide)

• Add the whole numbers.

• Put the whole number answer and fraction answer together.

Subtracting Mixed Numbers- borrowing and regrouping

When borrowing for fractions, you are borrowing 1 whole in the form of a fraction (examples: 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, etc.)

Multplying Fractions Review

• Draw a model.

• Use repeated addition.

• Use standard algorithm (multiply straight across).
