8
Multiple Select
List the three main functions of the musculoskeletal system ?
(activity 12)
Form
breathing
Stability
Movement
9
Why are these systems grouped together?
They are grouped together as the musculoskeletal system because they rely on one another to function.
Without a musculoskeletal system, the body would not be able to stand, walk or sit.
10
The muscular system
The job of the muscles in the musculoskeletal system is to allow people to move, talk and chew food.
They are in involved in circulation, respiration and digestion.
11
Movement
The main function of the muscular system is to create movement.
Movement is possible because of the skeletal muscles.
The muscles are attached to the bones and when they contract, they pull on the bones to make them move.

Circulation
The heart is a muscle that pumps blood around the body also known as a cardiac muscle.
The cardiac muscles contract (get smaller) and relax and this is how the heart pumps blood around your body.
Smooth muscle can be found in the arteries and veins around the heart.
14
Respiration
The diaphragm is a large muscle which is below the lungs and helps our body with the breathing process.
The diaphragm contracts and relaxes to push air in and out of the lungs which enables us to breathe.
15
Digestion
Smooth muscles in the body’s stomach and intestines help to move and break up food.
The muscles contract and relax to move food around the digestive system to mix the food inside the stomach.
