Root words can help us build new words and understand new words.
Root words like cycle and tract, for example can make other words by adding prefixes and suffixes to them
Pre (meaning before) and suf (meaning after) are "fixed" to the root word to help build meaning.
bicycle (two+turn), Cylone (turning wind storm)
extract (remove + pull ) tractor (pulling maching)
3

6
If you know the definition of the root word, you can guess at the meaning of the whole word.

Defendant (a person who is being accused)
Defensive (being on guard, assuming there is an attack)
