Multiplication and Division Vocabulary
We are learning about vocabulary pertaining to both multiplication and division today. Since multiplication and division are inverse operations, it's important to learn the vocabulary all at once.

Vocabulary
You will receive notes to glue into your interactive notebook when we return to school. In the meantime, go through this lesson as an introduction to the vocabulary. We do not expect mastery. We will do a quick check at the end to review some of the major vocabulary words.

Multiplication
Making equal groups to find the total

Factors & Product
Factors are the numbers being multiplied and the product is the answer to a multiplication problem. Remember - FACTORies make PRODUCTs.

Partial Products
Parts of the product that are found when you multiply the expanded form of a number

Array
A rectangular model of a multiplication problem

Area Model
Models multiplication by showing the two factors as the length and width of a rectangle

Associative Property of Multiplication
You can group factors differently with parentheses and you will still have the same product.

Commutative Property of Multiplication
You can change the order of the factors and you will still have the same product.

Distributive Property of Multiplication
You can break a number apart into its expanded form and then multiply it by the other factor. You will get the same product.

Identity Property of Multiplication
Any number multiplied by 1 remains the same number.

Zero Property of Multiplication
Any number multiplied by zero is zero.

Perfect Square
A perfect square is the product of identical factors.

Numerical Expression
A numerical expression shows an operation, but does not have an equal sign.

Division
Separating a total into equal groups or taking out equal groups

Quotient
The answer to a division problem

Remainder
The amount left over after all of the equal groups are made

Dividend
The "total amount" that is evenly divided in the problem

Divisor
The number we are dividing by in a division problem; it could be the number of groups or the group size depending on the situation.

Compatible Numbers
Compatible numbers are easy to compute in your head when estimating.

Strip Diagram
Strip diagrams are visual models (similar to bar models) that represent a problem situation.

Unknown Quantity
The unknown quantity can be represented with a variable. It is a number we don't know yet.

Multiples
When we list multiples, we are skip counting. For example, the first five multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.

Prime Numbers
Prime numbers only have 2 factors: 1 and themselves. For example, 5 is a prime number because its only factors are 1 and 5.

Composite Numbers
Composite numbers have more than two factors: 1, themselves, and at least one other factor.
