2

What do we look for when lines are perpendicular?

  • Look at the SLOPE!

  • Has to be opposite reciprocal "Change the sign and flip the fraction"

  • remember whole numbers go over one before you flip

3

Multiple Select

Check all the lines that are parallel to

 y=2x+5y=-2x+5

1

 2x+y=162x+y=16

2

 y=2x+1y=-2x+1

3

 y=2x10y=2x-10

4

 x2y=6x-2y=-6

4

Multiple Choice

If the equation is in standard form what do you have to do in order to get the slope?

1

go down the slide

2

pull the number off the x and that is your slope

3

solve for slope intercept first

5

If you said solve for slope intercept first you are correct

 (or if you remember the "cheat method"

 xy\frac{-x}{\text{}y}  then you can use that)

6

Multiple Choice

Tell what the 2 equations are:

 y=2x    and     y=12x +8y=-2x\ \ \ \ and\ \ \ \ \ y=\frac{1}{2}x\ +8

1

parallel

2

perpendicular

3

neither

7

Multiple Choice

Tell what the 2 equations are:

 y=72x+1    and     y=27x +8y=\frac{-7}{2}x+1\ \ \ \ and\ \ \ \ \ y=\frac{2}{7}x\ +8

1

parallel

2

perpendicular

3

neither

8

Multiple Choice

Tell what the 2 equations are:

 y=85x1    and     y=58x +2y=\frac{-8}{5}x-1\ \ \ \ and\ \ \ \ \ y=\frac{-5}{8}x\ +2

1

parallel

2

perpendicular

3

neither

9

Multiple Choice

Tell what the 2 equations are:

 4x+9y=1    and     9x4y=2-4x+9y=-1\ \ \ \ and\ \ \ \ \ -9x-4y=2

1

parallel

2

perpendicular

3

neither

10

Solving for perpendicular lines when given an equation y=3x-8 and point

 (9,5)(-9,5)

  • first-- pull the slope out of the equations

  • second-- make the opposite reciprocal (change sign and flip)

  • third-- plug into point slope form  yy=m(xx)y-y=m\left(x-x\right)

  • last-- solve for slope intercept

11

Multiple Choice

Solving for perpendicular lines when given an equation y=3x-8 and point (−9,5). What is the PERPENDICULAR slope that I would need to use to start solving this.

1

33

2

3-3

3

13\frac{-1}{3}

4

13\frac{1}{3}

12

Hopefully you picked the slope of   13\frac{-1}{3}

  • now plug that into your point slope form.

13

Multiple Choice

Solving for perpendicular lines when given an equation y=3x-8 and point (-9,5)  Which is the correct point slope form?

1

 y+5=13(x9)y+5=\frac{-1}{3}\left(x-9\right)

2

 y5=13(x+9)y-5=\frac{-1}{3}\left(x+9\right)

3

 y+5=13(x+9)y+5=\frac{-1}{3}\left(x+9\right)

4

 y5=13(x9)y-5=\frac{-1}{3}\left(x-9\right)

14

 y5=13(x+9)y-5=\frac{-1}{3}\left(x+9\right)

Hopefully you picked this one.  Now solve it for point slope form.

  • Distribute into the ()

  • add or subtract away form the y

15

Multiple Choice

Solving for perpendicular lines when given an equation y=3x-8 and point (−9,5)

1

y=13x+8y=\frac{-1}{3}x+8

2

y=13x8y=\frac{-1}{3}x-8

3

y=13x2y=\frac{-1}{3}x-2

4

y=13x+2y=\frac{-1}{3}x+2
