Time clauses are introduced by conjunctions such as: after, as soon as, before, until, when, while.

We do not use future forms in a time clause; we use the present

Examples

They’ll probably go skiing when they are on vacation. (future)

They went skiing when they were on vacation. (past)

I’ll go shopping while you cook dinner. (future)

He went shopping while his wife cooked dinner. (past)

Note

We place a comma after the time clause when it begins the sentence.

As soon as we arrive, we’re going straight to the hotel.
