Prior to the French and Indian war (aka the 7 years war) the 13 colonies operated much like 13 independent nations.
When war on the Western frontier threatened them, however, many colonial leaders advocated for unity among the 13 colonies to defend their lands.
Among those colonial leaders were Benjamin Franklin, who created the famous image.
