  • Prior to the French and Indian war (aka the 7 years war) the 13 colonies operated much like 13 independent nations.

  • When war on the Western frontier threatened them, however, many colonial leaders advocated for unity among the 13 colonies to defend their lands.

  • Among those colonial leaders were Benjamin Franklin, who created the famous image.
